Born in the vibrant city of Birmingham, John, the son of a doctor, embarked on a remarkable journey that would take him from the battlefield to the stage and screen. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps, John pursued his passion for the performing arts, enrolling in drama school at the tender age of 21.
Following his formal training, John honed his craft in various repertory theatres throughout the UK, including Wolverhampton, York, Carlisle, Shrewsbury, and Minehead. His dedication and talent eventually led him to join the esteemed cast of the long-running television series, Emergency Ward 10, in 1962. He took on the role of Resident Surgical Officer Andrew Shaw, a character that would become synonymous with his name.
In his personal life, John tied the knot with the lovely Jill Rowland, a talented actress in her own right. The union produced two sons, one of whom would follow in his father's footsteps and become an actor.
