Jon, a multifaceted individual with a passion for writing, filmmaking, and adventure, has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field of exploration and environmental conservation.
As a six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council, Jon has had the opportunity to embark on numerous expeditions, including a notable 3,741-mile crossing of Antarctica by dogsled, which was his first assignment for National Geographic Magazine.
Throughout his illustrious career, Jon has written eleven books and produced/directed over thirty documentary films. His feature documentaries include "Dear President Obama," "Antarctica, on the Edge," "After the Spill," and "Ghost Fleet."
Jon's work has taken him to various parts of the world, including the Aleutian Islands, French Polynesia, Gabon, and Tasmania, as part of his National Geographic-sponsored Oceans 8 project. Over the course of ten years, from 1999 to 2008, Jon and his teams explored the planet's one ocean and its coastlines, reporting on the state of the environment and the impact of human activity on the planet.
Jon is also the President of the One Ocean Media Foundation and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation. In recent years, he has focused on creating a series of short films that highlight the environmental risks and hopes for the Hudson River Valley, the birthplace of the American environmental movement.
In addition to his work as a filmmaker and writer, Jon is a Visiting Lecturer at Bard College, where he teaches in the Environment and Urban Studies Department. He also hosts a weekly radio show/podcast, "The Green Radio Hour with Jon Bowermaster," which can be found on radiokingston.org.
Jon resides in New York's Hudson Valley and continues to be a prominent figure in the world of environmental conservation and filmmaking.
