Jorge Alberto Furtado, a renowned Brazilian film and television director, and screenwriter, was born on June 9, 1959. Although he did not complete his university education, he pursued a diverse range of courses in medicine, psychology, journalism, and arts.
Furtado's professional journey began in the 1980s at TVE-RS, a local channel, where he held various roles, including reporter, presenter, editor, screenwriter, and producer. His innovative approach led to the creation of a TV show called Quizumba in 1982, which blended fiction and documentary elements with bold language, making it a groundbreaking program for Brazilian public television.
Between 1984 and 1986, Furtado served as the director of the Museu de Comunicação Social Hipólito José da Costa in Porto Alegre, while simultaneously working with José Pedro Goulart and Ana Luiza Azevedo to establish the production company Luz Produções. This venture enabled him to produce short films and stage plays for theater.
From 1986 to 1990, Furtado was involved in creating dozens of TV commercials. In 1987, he co-founded Casa de Cinema de Porto Alegre, where he remains an active participant. Additionally, in 1990, he worked on TV Globo, crafting scripts for numerous TV series.
Years later, in 2008, Harvard University organized an exhibition showcasing his films, titled "Jorge Furtado's Porto Alegre".
