Kentarou Miura, a renowned Japanese manga artist, was born in 1966 in Chiba City, Japan. During his college years at Nihon University, he debuted a 48-page manga titled Berserk Prototype in 1988, which showcased his introduction to the fantasy world of Berserk and earned him a prize from the Comi Manga School.
Following his graduation in 1989, Miura started working on a project called King of Wolves, based on a script by Buronson, the writer of Hokuto no Ken (Fist Of The North Star). The same year, he began creating his magnum opus, Berserk, which initially received limited success.
In 1990, the first volume of Berserk was released, and Miura continued to collaborate with Buronson on another manga, Japan. However, it was the "Golden Age" story arc of Berserk that catapulted Miura to fame, making him one of the most prominent contemporary manga artists.
From then on, Miura dedicated himself exclusively to working on Berserk, with the series spanning 35 volumes and still ongoing. Although he has expressed his intention to publish more manga in the future, his primary focus remains on Berserk.
In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk, which aired on NTV. Additionally, various art books and supplemental materials based on Berserk were released, showcasing Miura's incredible attention to detail and dedication to his craft.
The Berserk franchise has also spawned a vast array of merchandise, including statues, action figures, key rings, video games, and a trading card game, all of which have contributed to its enduring popularity.
In 2002, Kentaro Miura received the second place in the Tezuka Osamu (Astro Boy) Cultural Prize of Excellence for Berserk, solidifying his position as one of the most celebrated manga artists of his generation.
