Kumar Muniandy, a second-generation Tamil Malaysian, was born in Malaysia to parents who were first-generation Tamil Malaysians. His grandparents, originally from Tamil Nadu in South India, were brought to Malaysia by the British as coolies in the 1930s for colonial work.
With a multilingual background, Kumar can communicate in street Tamil, Malay, basic conversational Cantonese, and intermediate B1 German. He relocated to London in 2003 to pursue a career in acting and later expanded his profile to Berlin, where he currently resides.
For fourteen years, Kumar auditioned as a South Asian actor in London and Berlin, often landing roles that stereotyped his ethnicity and melanin-rich skin, such as terrorists, problematic Indians, and Muslims. This experience motivated him to take control of his own narrative and create opportunities for himself and other marginalized artists.
In 2022, Kumar wrote, directed, and performed his solo play, "Second Class Queer," at the English Theatre Berlin, which received a sold-out response and an invitation to return in April 2023. The show's incredible turnout and audience feedback solidified its success, with a repeat performance scheduled for July 2024.
Currently, Kumar is seeking a producer to adapt his play into a TV script, as well as theatre producers and venues in the United Kingdom for future performances.
