Born Hiramaru Kumiko in Chiba Prefecture's Sanbu-gun, which is adjacent to Narita, Japan on June 17th, 1978, Kumiko Aso embarked on her film career with 1995's Bad Guy Beach, despite initially lacking interest in acting.
It was 1998's Dr. Akagi that introduced her to a broader audience in Japan, earning her the Japan Academy Prize for Best Supporting Actress. Interestingly, her manager had sent her to this film's auditions, and Kumiko would later claim she was uncertain about what she was auditioning for.
Initially, Kumiko aimed to become a pop star and had applied for an audition, which she won in 1995 as part of a Japanese schoolgirl audition for the Young Jump weekly magazine.
Throughout her career, Kumiko has established herself as a well-known actress, model, and product representative in her native country, starring in films such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa's works, making a cameo in the cult film Tenten, and taking on the role of a stalker in Moteki, during which she adopted an older look by cutting her hair.
Earlier, Kumiko had expanded her horizons by playing a leading role as an Iranian-Japanese in the 2007 Iranian film Hafez. She had contemplated quitting acting in 2006, but persisted due to her enjoyment of her time in the Jiko Keisatsu TV serial.
In her personal life, Kumiko married stylist Daisuke Iga in late 2007 after dating for four years and gave birth to their daughter in 2012. She welcomed a son in 2016. Kumiko cites reading manga as one of her hobbies and is signed to the Breath talent agency.
