Laine Mägi, born Laine Michelson-Adamson on February 3, 1959, is a renowned Estonian actress, dancer, choreographer, and dance pedagogue who embarked on her illustrious career as a teenager.
Born in Kehra to Peeter and Elli-Anniki Michelson-Adamson (née Pennie),Laine is the eldest of two siblings, with a younger brother, and has a notable connection to the world of acting through her first cousin, actress Terje Pennie-Kolberg.
As a child, Laine developed a passion for ballet, and at the tender age of nine, she began taking lessons at the prestigious Tallinn Ballet School, commuting from Kehra to Tallinn by train. Her early foray into the world of ballet culminated in her debut at the Estonia Theatre at the age of ten, where she starred in a stage production of Astrid Lindgren's beloved character, Pippi Longstocking.
However, due to health issues, Laine was forced to abandon her ballet classes in 1973. Between 1976 and 1981, she honed her skills as a dancer in various venues throughout Tallinn.
Laine's educational pursuits took her to secondary school in Tallinn, where she graduated in 1977, before enrolling in the Tallinn State Conservatory (now the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre) to study acting under the tutelage of Aarne Üksküla. She graduated in 1982 alongside a talented group of classmates, including Margus Oopkaup, Jaan Rekkor, Anu Lamp, Sulev Teppart, Andrus Vaarik, and Viire Valdma.
In addition to her impressive acting career, Laine is also the founder of the Laine Mägi School of Dance, based in Pärnu, further solidifying her status as a pioneering figure in the Estonian entertainment industry.
