Biography

Leslie Henson, a renowned comedian, was born in London in the year 1891. His distinctive physical attributes, which included bulging eyes, a malleable face, and a raspy voice, became a hallmark of his performances. As a child, he received formal training at the prestigious Cairns James School of Musical and Dramatic Art. During his formative years, he was already writing and producing theatrical pieces, showcasing his creative talent.

Henson's rise to fame began in Music Hall from 1910, and he soon made his West End debut in 1912 with the role of 'Nicely, Thanks!' in the play of the same name. His subsequent performance in 'Tonight's the Night' in 1915 catapulted him to overnight stardom. He went on to star in numerous hit West End musical comedies, including 'Yes, Uncle!' in 1917.

In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Henson served in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. After the war, he returned to the West End, starring in productions such as 'Kissing Time' in 1919 and a string of musical comedies and farces throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

As a film actor, Henson appeared in at least 15 movies, with his first role being 'The Lifeguardsman' for the British Actors Film Company in 1916. Some of his most notable film credits include 'Alf's Button' (1920),co-starring Alma Taylor, and 'Tons of Money' (1924). He also starred in several talkies, with 'A Warm Corner' (1930) and 'It's a Boy' (1934) being two of his most well-known films. His last screen appearance was in the late 1950s.

Henson was a co-founder of ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association),a British organization that provided entertainment for the armed forces during wartime. He passed away in London in 1957 at the age of 66, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved comedian and entertainer.
