Lyon Himan "Chaim" Green, later known as Lorne Greene, was born on February 12, 1915, in the city of Ottawa, located within the province of Ontario, in the country of Canada. During his time as a student at Queen's University, Canada, Greene began to pursue his passion for acting, which would eventually become a significant aspect of his life.
Upon graduating from university, Greene embarked on a career in radio broadcasting, where his distinctive, deep, and authoritative voice quickly earned him recognition as Canada's leading newscaster. His remarkable talent and dedication to his craft led to his status as a prominent figure in Canadian broadcasting.
In the early 1950s, Greene made the decision to leave Canada and pursue a career in Hollywood, where he would go on to achieve great success in the film and television industries. His impressive career was marked by a wide range of roles in television, films, and radio, with his most notable successes coming in the form of two iconic television series: the long-running Western drama "Bonanza" (1959),in which he played the patriarch of a wealthy frontier family, and the science-fiction series "Battlestar Galactica" (1978).
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the performing arts and his dedication to his community, Greene was honored with the prestigious title of Officer of the Order of Canada in 1969.
Tragically, Greene's life was cut short when he passed away at the age of 72 due to complications from pneumonia, which was triggered by heart surgery, on September 11, 1987, in Santa Monica, California.
