Mark Mangini is a renowned two-time Academy Award-winning Sound Designer with six nominations to his name, celebrated for his work on iconic films such as Blade Runner 2049, Star Trek I, IV, and V, The Fifth Element, and Gremlins. Over the course of his 45-year career in Hollywood, Mangini has masterfully crafted altered sonic realities for motion pictures, honing his skills as a frequent lecturer, outspoken proponent for sound as art, and accomplished guitarist/songwriter.
Mangini's unique perspective on sound design stems from his musical upbringing, where he firmly believes that all organized sound is music. He views his work in movies as a composition, akin to those of Beethoven and the Beatles, albeit with a distinct twist. Mangini's compositions often incorporate dissonance, unconventional melodic content, and arrhythmia to create a captivating sonic experience.
Born and raised in Boston, Mangini attended Holy Cross College as a foreign language major, but his passion for filmmaking eventually led him to Los Angeles in 1976. He landed his first job in the entertainment industry at the age of 19, working in the sound department of Hanna Barbera Studios, where he created funny noises for children's cartoons.
Mangini's keen ears, honed from years of language study and guitar playing, proved to be an asset in his career as a Sound Designer. He founded and ran Weddington Productions, a successful Hollywood post-production sound company, for 25 years before joining Formosa Group in Hollywood, California, where he continues to work as a Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer, and Re-recording mixer.
