Matilda Rapaport was a renowned Swedish extreme free-skier, celebrated for her captivating performances in the critically acclaimed films Shades of Winter (2013),Pure (2014),and Between (2016). Her remarkable career, marked by her fearless approach to the sport, was tragically cut short on July 14, 2016, when she was caught in an avalanche while filming promotional material for Ubisoft's highly anticipated video game, Steep.
Rapaport was alone on the Andean mountain above the Chilean village of Farellones, near Santiago, after a snowstorm had cleared, descending the slope in perfect powder snow that was ideal for her craft and the filmmakers' vision. However, the snow was loose and unstable, and despite wearing a crash helmet, she would have been aware of the approaching avalanche, but possibly too late.
According to her manager, Rapaport attempted to outrun the avalanche, but ultimately, she was buried under the snow and fell into a coma. She was rushed to a hospital in Santiago de Chile, where she sadly passed away on July 18, 2016, at the age of 30.
Matilda Rapaport's death served as a poignant reminder of the risks and unpredictability of extreme sports, and her legacy continues to inspire and influence the world of free-skiing.
