After seven years of training, Harney went on to establish his own acting studio in New York City, where he directed and acted in over 80 plays and one-acts, including a Broadway production of On The Waterfront.

He then transitioned to guest performances on various shows, including Deadwood, where he played the role of Steve Fields for two seasons.
