Biography

Milton George Gustavus Sills, a celebrated American thespian of the early 20th century, embarked on a remarkable journey in the world of entertainment, commencing his life's odyssey on January 12, 1882, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, within a family of considerable wealth.

His parents, William Henry Sills and Josephine Antoinette Troost Sills, hailed from a prominent banking family, replete with financial prosperity.

As the culmination of his educational endeavors, Sills was extended a research opportunity at the esteemed institution, a position he ultimately occupied before transitioning into the realm of academia as a professor. However, he ultimately chose to depart from the confines of academia to pursue a career in the performing arts.

In the year 1905, a renowned stage actor by the name of Donald Robertson made a visit to the university, during which he took notice of Sills' talent and encouraged him to explore the world of acting, a suggestion that would ultimately prove to be a turning point in Sills' life. With Robertson's guidance, Sills joined his stock theater company and embarked on a nationwide tour, thus commencing his journey as a professional actor.

Born in 1914, Sills embarked on a remarkable cinematic journey, making his film debut in the lavish and highly anticipated drama, The Pit, under the esteemed World Film Company, and subsequently securing a lucrative contract with the illustrious film producer, William A. Brady.

The Pit, a massive commercial success, served as a springboard for Sills' burgeoning career, leading to the creation of three more films for the World Film Company, including the iconic The Deep Purple, opposite the legendary silent screen star, Clara Kimball Young.

By the late 1910s, Sills had ascended to the pinnacle of stardom, earning the distinction of leading man status, and began to navigate the world of freelance acting, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career.

Noted actor and performer, Sills, embarked on a illustrious career in the 1920s, securing lucrative contracts with esteemed film studios such as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount Pictures, and Pathé Exchange. During this period, he frequently collaborated with renowned leading ladies, including the illustrious Geraldine Farrar, the iconic Gloria Swanson, and the talented Viola Dana. In addition to his extensive work in silent films, Sills also showcased his remarkable vocal abilities in two sound pictures, further demonstrating his impressive range and versatility as a performer.

Tragically, the life of Sills came to an abrupt and unforeseen halt on September 15, 1930, at the tender age of 48, while he was engaging in a leisurely game of tennis with his loving wife at their residence in the picturesque city of Santa Barbara, California, a place he had called home.

As news of his untimely passing spread, the world was left to mourn the loss of this remarkable individual, whose life was cut short in the prime of his years.

In the days that followed, friends, family, and fans gathered to pay their respects to Sills, who was laid to rest in the tranquil surroundings of the Rosehill Cemetery and Mausoleum in Chicago, Illinois, a place where his memory would live on forever.
