Biography

Mushtaq Kak, a celebrated Indian actor and director, emerged into the world in 1961, amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Jammu & Kashmir, India. His parents, who originated from the same region, carried with them a treasure trove of cultural legacy that would eventually shape Kak's artistic pursuits. His father, a proud Kashmiri from the Kak caste, and his mother, a Dogra, imbued in him a profound reverence for the diverse cultural customs and traditions of the region, thereby sowing the seeds of a lifelong passion for the arts.

Kak's illustrious career has been inextricably linked with the prestigious Shri Ram Centre in New Delhi, where he has had the esteemed distinction of serving as the artistic director.

His exceptional direction has been met with widespread acclaim, resulting in him being bestowed with numerous prestigious awards, including the coveted best director award for his outstanding productions of Andha Yug, Malika, and Pratibimb.

His remarkable plays, Maha Brahmin and Alladad, have been adjudged the best plays of 1999 and 2000, respectively, a testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft and his ability to consistently push the boundaries of theatrical excellence.

Noted Indian theatre director, Kak, has had a prolific career, boasting an impressive repertoire of over 100 plays. Among his most notable productions is the massive hit "Andorra", which featured Kartik Chaudhry as the lead character Pyder. He has also brought to life the works of Indian playwrights, including Vijay Tendulkar's "Ghansi Ram Kotwal", Krishan Chander's "Gadhe Ke Wapsi", Sharad Joshi's "Alladad", Vasant Kanetkar's "Kasturi Mrig", Moti Lal Kemmo's "Nagar Udaas", and Federico Garcia Lorca's "The Blood Wedding".

Noteworthy beyond his far-reaching contributions to the realm of theatre, Kak has also made a profound impact in the film industry, his versatility and talent extending to numerous Hindi movies, such as "Hijack" and "Sikandar", as well as the Hollywood film "Amal", thereby cementing his status as a prominent and influential figure in Indian theatre and cinema.
