Peter Getzels is an acclaimed director, producer, and cinematographer who has won numerous awards, including an Emmy Award. He is the co-creator and producer/director of the long-running PBS series, Closer To Truth, which is now in its 20th season. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, Getzels has directed and produced more than 150 hours of television as well as numerous award-winning films.
Getzels' fascination with filmmaking began when he was an anthropologist, explorer, and mountaineer. He conducted fieldwork in the Peruvian Andes, spent a winter in the Himalayan villages of Ladakh, hunted and sledded with the Inuit in Greenland, and kayaked from north to south along the coast of Vietnam. His films have taken him to war zones, hill tribes in Southeast Asia, ships in the South Pacific, and up some of the world's highest peaks.
In addition to running his own boutique production company, Getzels Gordon Productions, he has worked as a staff producer in the BBC Science Department and as a staff director and series producer at National Geographic. Getzels has also directed and produced a four-part series on ancient Egypt for National Geographic.
Getzels holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology & Comparative Religion from Bowdoin College, a Master's degree in Anthropology from the London School of Economics, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the National Film and TV School in England. He has also been a member of the film committee of the Royal Anthropological Institute and a founding member of the South American Explorers Club.
