Biography

Petter Baiestorf, a pioneering force in the autonomous Brazilian video production scene, has made a lasting impact on the country's cinematic identity, leaving an indelible mark on the national visual arts landscape. His innovative and creative pursuits have been deeply informed and shaped by the influential works of renowned filmmakers such as John Waters, George Kuchar, and José Mojica Marins.

Born in the year 1974, Baiestorf's early life in Vila Oldenburgo, Palmitos, SC, was profoundly shaped by the rustic surroundings and the community of farmers and workers engaged in the wood and ceramic industry. This formative environment instilled in him a robust sense of individuality, characterized by a pronounced inclination towards nonconformity. As he matured, Baiestorf developed into a self-taught individual, unencumbered by traditional beliefs or dogma. His atheism, anarchism, and free-thinking nature further distinguished him as a unique and independent thinker, with a personality that was distinctly his own.

Baiestorf, a precocious and innovative young poet, embarked on a creative journey by publishing his original poems and provocative anti-religious writings in a series of influential fanzines, which served as a platform for his artistic expression and social commentary.

In the year 1991, a pivotal moment in the trajectory of Baiestorf's career unfolded as he co-founded Canibal Produções alongside his dear friend, the esteemed E. B. Toniolli. This nascent venture would eventually undergo a metamorphosis, blossoming into Canibal-Mabuse Produções in 1996, following a fruitful association with the visionary Cesar (Coffin) Souza.

As the years passed, the company continued to evolve, with a significant transformation taking place in the year 2000. This marked the genesis of Canibal Filmes, the entity that would come to embody Baiestorf's artistic vision and entrepreneurial acumen.

In the year 1997, Baiestorf embarked on a creative journey, joining forces with Carli Bortolanza to produce a collection of deeply personal films under the innovative banner of Caos Filmes. This partnership marked a significant milestone in his career, as it allowed him to tap into his innermost thoughts and emotions, resulting in a body of work that was both deeply personal and visually striking.

Fast forward to the year 2001, Baiestorf took his passion for experimental filmmaking to the next level by co-founding N.A.V.E. (Associated Experimental Video Center) in Palmitos, alongside his fellow collaborators Cesar Souza and Elio Copini. This groundbreaking venture served as a hub for creative expression, providing a platform for artists to push the boundaries of their craft and explore new and innovative ways of storytelling.
