Phyllis Hyman was a renowned American singer, songwriter, and actress known for her powerful, soulful voice and captivating stage presence. Born in Philadelphia in 1949, she began her professional career in New York City, where she was discovered by producer Norman Connors and other prominent artists.
Hyman's early success came with her debut album, released in 1977, which featured the hit singles "Loving You/Losing You" and "I Don't Wanna Lose You." She soon signed with Arista Records and released her second album, "Somewhere In My Lifetime," in 1978. The album included the hit single "You Know How to Love Me," which became one of her signature songs.
Throughout the 1980s, Hyman continued to release successful albums and singles, including "Can't We Fall in Love Again" and "Goddess of Love." She also appeared in several Broadway productions, including the hit musical "Sophisticated Ladies," for which she received a Tony Award nomination.
In the late 1980s, Hyman's career was put on hold due to contractual disputes with Arista Records.
