Biography

Richard Bennett, a renowned American actor, rose to fame as a charismatic stage and silent screen matinee idol during the early decades of the 20th century. Born in 1870 in Deacon's Mills, Indiana, he was the son of George Washington Bennett and Eliza Huffman, and had a younger sister named Ina Blanche Bennett.

Before embarking on his illustrious acting career, Bennett had a diverse range of occupations, including working as a sailor on Great Lakes steamers, a professional boxer, a medicine showman, a troubadour, and a night clerk in a hotel in Chicago.

Bennett's cinematic debut in the silent film era unfolded with a starring role in the 1914 motion picture "Damaged Goods", alongside his spouse, the talented Adrienne Morrison, with whom he shared a collaborative creative endeavor in adapting the screenplay and assuming directorial responsibilities for the dramatic production.

This remarkable cinematic achievement was swiftly followed by his appearance in the 1916 film "The Valley of Decision", where he had the distinction of sharing the screen with his wife, Adrienne Morrison, as well as their three lovely daughters, making this film a truly family affair.

In the year 1922, a pivotal moment in the illustrious career of Conrad Nagel unfolded as he took to the esteemed Broadway stage, assuming the title role in the captivating melodrama "He Who Gets Slapped," penned by the renowned Russian author Leonid Andreyev.

The phenomenal success of the play, marked by its widespread acclaim and enthusiastic reception, would ultimately lead to a cinematic adaptation by the prestigious film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with the inimitable Lon Chaney bringing the character to life on the silver screen.

As the cinematic landscape evolved with the incorporation of sound, a hitherto untapped avenue of opportunity emerged for the talented Bennett, who subsequently carved out a successful career as a character actor.

In 1931, Bennett shared the silver screen with his accomplished daughter Constance Bennett in the film "Bought!", a testament to the strong family bonds that existed between them.

Born on November 8, 1903, Bennett embarked on a lifelong journey of matrimony when he exchanged vows with the lovely actress Adrienne Morrison in the picturesque setting of Jersey City.

Together, the couple welcomed three delightful daughters into the world, their family being blessed with an abundance of love and joy.

However, the marriage was not destined to last, and the couple's union ultimately came to an end in April 1925, a poignant reminder that even the most seemingly indomitable relationships can sometimes falter.

Bennett's subsequent marital union was a union with Aimee Raisch, a connection he forged during the theatrical production of the play "Creoles" in the vibrant city of San Francisco. This marriage took place on July 11, 1927, in the bustling metropolis of Chicago, where the couple exchanged their vows in a private ceremony. However, their union was short-lived, as they decided to go their separate ways in April 1934. The divorce was eventually finalized in 1937, marking the end of this chapter in Bennett's personal life.

Noted thespian, Constance Bennett, left an indelible mark on the world of cinema, with a body of work that spanned decades and included a diverse array of roles.

One of her earliest notable performances was in the 1928 film "Jarnegan", where she took on the challenging and multifaceted character of a belligerent, drunken movie director, showcasing her impressive range and versatility as an actress.

Tragically, her life was cut short when she succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 74, passing away on October 22, 1944, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles.
