Person Biography:
Richard Eichberg was a German director and producer who started his career as an actor on the stage in 1906. He co-founded the Richard Eichberg-Film GmbH production company in 1915 and specialized in producing technically proficient, economically budgeted crime thrillers, melodramas, comedies, and operettas. Eichberg had a fondness for setting his films in exotic locations and discovered several future Hollywood stars, including Anna May Wong, Franciska Gaal, and Mona Maris. He also directed Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch in the comedy Die keusche Susanne in 1926.
Eichberg's career spanned over three decades, during which he worked in Germany, France, and Bulgaria. He made several notable films, including the Jules Verne adventure The Czar's Courier in 1936 and the remakes of Fritz Lang's Indian two-parter The Tiger of Eschnapur and Das indische Grabmal in 1938.
However, Eichberg's career declined in the post-war era, and he failed to find work in Hollywood. He attempted to revive his career in Germany with the fantasy film Die Reise nach Marrakesch in 1949, but it was a commercial failure. Despite this, Eichberg had made shrewd investments throughout his career and was able to retire comfortably.
