Richard Kuhlman, a multifaceted individual, was born on March 7, 1955, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his innate passion for acting was evident from a young age. As a child, he would often take charge, directing his friends in imaginative play scenarios, whether in a treehouse or engaged in pretend battles as cowboys or soldiers.
Throughout his high school years, Richard was an active member of Young People's Theatre, earning a prestigious Guildie Award in 1973 for his portrayal of Fagin in the production of Oliver!. His college years at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, were filled with a variety of performances and directing credits, including Shakespearean plays and summer stock musicals.
However, Richard's trajectory took an unexpected turn when he dropped out of college to become the Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Festival of Cincinnati, a position made possible by a CETA Grant from the Jimmie Carter Administration. This experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
In 1979, Richard relocated to Chicago, where he spent four years honing his craft as an actor at Paul Sills Story Theatre, the Goodman, Second City, and in television commercials. His move to Hollywood in 1983 marked the beginning of a successful career in film, working with renowned directors such as Ron Howard, John Cassavetes, and Robert Townsend.
On stage, Richard has been heavily influenced by the work of Paul Sills, Jon Jory, and Tom Humphrey, among others. In his personal life, he has been married to Amy Lynn Stevenson, a talented fine artist and illustrator, since 2014. The couple resides in the picturesque Ojai Valley.
