Biography

Bob's life began in the iconic city of Hollywood, California, where he spent his formative years in the charming Baldwin Hills neighborhood. His childhood home, a testament to his father's craftsmanship, stood as a constant presence in his life. Even as a young child, Bob exhibited a natural aptitude for showmanship, often organizing elaborate performances for his neighborhood friends, who would gladly pay a penny to attend these exclusive events. This early inclination towards the spotlight hinted at the entertainer he would eventually become. As he navigated the halls of Dorsey High School, Bob remained an integral part of the school's drama productions, consistently showcasing his talent and passion for the performing arts.

Bob's extraordinary journey during World War II began with his appointment as a weatherman within the 10th Weather Squadron, a prestigious unit of the 14th Air Force, also famously known as the "Flying Tigers," stationed in the bustling city of Kunming, China.

As his wartime duties continued to evolve, Bob received a new assignment, tasked with overseeing the organization of mail services for all the various military units operating within the vast and complex China-Burma-India theatre.

In addition to his military responsibilities, Bob's artistic inclinations began to take shape, as he made his debut in the world of acting by participating in an Area Entertainment Guild production of the popular play "Room Service," which was specifically designed to entertain and lift the spirits of the troops.

As the dust settled following the tumultuous period of global conflict, Bob made the decision to return to the sun-kissed city of Los Angeles, where he would embark on a new chapter of his life. His destination was the esteemed Pasadena Playhouse, a hallowed institution renowned for its excellence in the realm of theatre arts. After four years of intense study and dedication, Bob proudly earned his degree in 1949, his academic achievement a testament to his unwavering passion for the performing arts.

Undeterred by the challenges that lay ahead, Bob seized the opportunity to become one of the founding members of the Orchard Gables Repertory Theatre Company, a pioneering theatrical ensemble that would go on to leave an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Hollywood. The company's humble abode was situated at the intersection of Fountain and Wilcox, a location that would serve as the catalyst for countless memorable performances, creative collaborations, and enduring friendships.

Bob's unwavering dedication to his vision of establishing his own theatrical venue led him to make a pivotal decision in 1955, purchasing a parcel of land with the ultimate goal of bringing his creative vision to life. With unrelenting passion, he embarked on a project to construct a 90-seat theatre, boasting an innovative "in-the-round" seating arrangement. The culmination of his tireless efforts came in January 1956, as Bob proudly opened the doors to the Horseshoe Stage Theatre, situated on the renowned Melrose Avenue in the heart of Hollywood. For many years, this esteemed venue served as a hub for Bob's artistic endeavors, as he wore multiple hats, taking on the roles of producer, director, and star in a plethora of plays. Today, the theatre, now rebranded as the Zephyr Theatre, stands as a testament to Bob's indomitable spirit and his unwavering commitment to his craft.

Robert's extracurricular activities were multifaceted, with a passion for acting and a desire to share his knowledge with others, as he pursued a career in teaching. However, in his free time, he had a penchant for embarking on adventurous journeys, often traversing the country in his motorhome, seeking out the most idyllic and serene fishing locations.

Despite being confronted with mobility challenges for a considerable period of time, Robert's spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to live life to the fullest. Ultimately, his remarkable journey came to a close on February 12, 2016, as he peacefully transitioned into eternal rest, surrounded by the love and support of his two sons and their families.
