Biography

Ruby Elzy, a pioneering African American opera singer, forged an enduring legacy in the entertainment world, captivating audiences on stages, radios, and motion pictures with her extraordinary artistry. Hailing from the state of Mississippi, Elzy's remarkable odyssey commenced when she originated the iconic role of Serena in George Gershwin's trailblazing opera, "Porgy and Bess", on the esteemed Broadway stage in 1935.

Before embarking on her illustrious Broadway career, Elzy initially made her film debut in the cinematic masterpiece "The Emperor Jones" back in 1933, alongside the renowned and iconic Paul Robeson, while concurrently pursuing her studies at the prestigious New York-based Juilliard School, a renowned institution of higher learning.

Elzy's life was tragically cut short in 1943, just after she had completed a tour of the iconic opera "Porgy and Bess", leaving behind a legacy that was abruptly and prematurely silenced.

Her untimely demise was attributed to complications that arose following an operation, initially believed to be a minor procedure, which ultimately proved to be a fatal misjudgment.

Throughout her illustrious career, Elzy was married twice, her second husband being the accomplished actor Jack Carr, who had the distinction of sharing the stage with her in "Porgy and Bess" and also making appearances in numerous films.

In fact, Jack Carr's involvement in Elzy's life was multifaceted, not only did they share a romantic bond, but they also collaborated professionally, their partnership on stage and screen a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression.

Despite her all-too-brief time in the spotlight, Elzy's impact on the world of entertainment was significant, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire and captivate audiences to this very day.
