Biography

Alexandre-Pierre Georges Guitry, a renowned French thespian, multifaceted entertainer, and prominent figure in the world of boulevard theatre, is more commonly known by his stage name, Sacha Guitry. Born into a family of esteemed thespians, Guitry was the son of the celebrated French actor, Lucien Guitry, and was destined to follow in his father's footsteps, pursuing a career in the theatrical profession.

On a date that would eventually become synonymous with greatness, February 21st, 1885, a life of unparalleled brilliance was ushered into the world. The cradle that rocked this exceptional individual was Saint Petersburg, Russia, a city steeped in history and culture. The father of this prodigy, Lucien, was a man of great passion and conviction, who, in a bold display of defiance, had eloped with his beloved Marie-Louise-Renée née Delmas de Pont-Jest, the love of his life. Despite the initial disapproval of their families, the star-crossed lovers had exchanged vows in a beautiful ceremony at St Martin in the Fields, London, in 1882. Following their wedding, the newlyweds made the bold decision to relocate to the then Russian capital, where Lucien would go on to run the esteemed French theatre company, the Théâtre Michel, from 1882 to 1891.

The life of Guitry was marked by a perpetual state of flux, as his father's persistent infidelity created a tumultuous domestic environment. This instability was further exacerbated by his mother's decision to initiate divorce proceedings in 1888, a move that would have a lasting impact on Guitry's life.

In addition to the challenges posed by his father's adultery, Guitry was also forced to confront the tragic loss of two of his brothers in infancy, a devastating experience that would likely have a profound effect on his emotional well-being.

On the other hand, his surviving brother, Jean, would go on to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, working as both an actor and a journalist.

Sacha's auspicious entry into the world of theatre commenced at the tender age of five, when he made his stage debut in his father's esteemed company. As he matured, he went on to establish himself as a prolific playwright, authoring an impressive total of 115 plays throughout the course of his illustrious career.

Renowned for his captivating stage presence, Sacha's performances were particularly noteworthy in the realm of boulevardier roles, where his charisma and wit left audiences in awe. Furthermore, his personal life was marked by a series of high-profile marriages to talented actresses whose careers he skillfully nurtured and advanced.

Sacha Guitry's theatrical repertoire encompassed a diverse array of productions, spanning historical dramas to modern comedies, some of which featured musical scores composed by esteemed artists such as André Messager and Reynaldo Hahn.

As the era of silent films emerged, Guitry opted to distance himself from this new medium, deeming the absence of spoken dialogue catastrophic to the dramatic effect he sought to convey.

The latter period of Guitry's illustrious career was marred by allegations of collaboration with the German occupation forces following France's surrender in World War II.

Despite the formal dismissal of these charges, Guitry, a passionate and ardent patriot, was deeply disheartened by the vitriolic criticism and public scorn he received from some of his fellow countrymen, a sentiment that would likely have been particularly distressing for an individual who had previously been celebrated for his contributions to French cinema.

Sacha Guitry, a renowned French actor, playwright, and filmmaker, succumbed to mortality on July 24, 1957. Following his passing, a grand funeral procession was held in his honor, with a remarkable 12,000 individuals lining the streets to pay their respects as they filed past his coffin prior to the burial. The ceremony took place in the City of Light, Paris, where Guitry's legacy would forever be etched in the hearts of the French people.
