Sharon Lewis is a highly acclaimed director, renowned for her exceptional directing flair, distinct cinematic voice, and ability to elicit outstanding performances from her actors. Her impressive body of work has been recognized globally, garnering multiple nominations for Best Director across various platforms, including the Canadian Screen Awards.
As a former actor, Sharon drew from her own experiences in the entertainment industry, where she made a splash in her title role in the Cannes-nominated film RUDE, the first all-black above-the-line feature film from Canada. While balancing her acting career in Los Angeles, Sharon honed her directing skills at the prestigious University of California, Los Angeles, before going on to direct several award-winning short films.
The debut of her first feature film, Brown Girl Begins, in 2017 solidified her status as a sought-after director in the realm of scripted stories featuring black women protagonists, genre, Caribbean, and BIPOC representation on screen. Sharon has collaborated with some of the industry's top talent, including four-time Grammy Award winner Kelly Rowland, Jason Priestly, Timothy Hutton, Doug Liman, Clement Virgo, and recently directed a film for the Oprah Winfrey Network.
Currently, Sharon is leveraging her extensive experience, storytelling abilities, and directorial expertise to fully realize her potential as an exceptional filmmaker. Through her production company, urbansoul inc, she is committed to developing genre features and scripted TV series that showcase the stories and talents of black women, black queer women, and the BIPOC 2SLGBTQ+ community.
