Shobha Khote was born into a family of performers. Her father, Nandu Khote, was a star on stage and in silent movies, and her aunt, Durga Khote, was a famous movie personality. Growing up in a big, joint family, Shobha had a happy and carefree childhood, playing with her many cousins, most of whom were boys. She studied at St Teresa's Convent, Girgaum, and graduated in English Literature from Wilson College.
Shobha was an athletic child, excelling in sports like swimming and cycling, and even set a new record for the one-mile cycling event. Her family was sports-minded, and her father had built a gymnasium in their home, where many of his friends would exercise. Shobha learned the values of hard work, sincerity, and team spirit from sports.
She began making occasional appearances on stage both in school and college, but only took it casually. However, her sports achievements and photographs in newspapers and magazines caught the attention of well-known director Amiya Chakraborty, who invited her for a screen test. She was cast in his film Seema, which starred Nutan and Balraj Sahni, and received critical acclaim for her performance.
Shobha's early career was marked by her pairing with comedian Mehmood, with whom she starred in many successful films, including Sasural, Dil Ek Mandir, Dil Tera Diwana, Bharosa, and several others. She also appeared in films like Paying Guest, Champakali, Dekh Kabira Na Roya, and Ek Duje Ke Liye, which celebrated jubilees at the box office.
