Stephen Cone is a South Carolina-born and Chicago-based filmmaker, whose cinematic achievements have garnered significant recognition and acclaim. One of his most notable works, Princess Cyd, was named one of the best movies of the decade by Vanity Fair, and has received retrospective screenings on the Criterion Channel, MUBI, and at the Museum of the Moving Image, Berlin's Unknown Pleasures Festival, and Manchester's Bigger Than Life.
This critically acclaimed film has also appeared on multiple Best of 2017 lists, including IndieWire, Vulture, Vanity Fair, Vox, and NPR, and has been showcased at numerous film festivals worldwide, such as the BFI London Film Festival, BAMcinemaFest, Frameline, and Maryland Film Festival. Princess Cyd was subsequently acquired for distribution by Wolfe Releasing and is now available to stream on Hulu.
Prior to this, his film Henry Gamble's Birthday Party, also streaming on Hulu, was featured in The New York Times' "Anatomy of a Scene" series, screened at BAMcinemaFest and BFI Flare, and won the Silver Q Hugo Award at the 2015 Chicago International Film Festival.
Stephen's earlier work, The Wise Kids, received the Outfest Grand Jury Awards for US Feature and Screenwriting in 2011 and was a New York Times Critics Pick. Interestingly, his sister, Christina Cone Doherty, is a musician and the lead vocalist of the Nashville-based indie-pop band Frances Cone.
