Tim Kirkman's directorial career commenced with the documentary "Dear Jesse", a personal diary film that garnered widespread recognition, including nominations for the Gotham, GLAAD, and Independent Spirit Awards, and was subsequently named Best Documentary of the Year by the Boston Society of Film Critics in 1997. "Dear Jesse" also won the Audience Award at Frameline and screened in numerous film festivals globally. Following its debut on the HBO/Cinemax Reel Life series, Tim received an Emmy Award nomination for Nonfiction Writing.
Tim's subsequent directorial efforts included a film adaptation of David Drake's "The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me". His third feature, "Loggerheads", premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005 and starred Tess Harper, Chris Sarandon, Michael Kelly, Bonnie Hunt, Robin Weigert, Michael Learned, and Kip Pardue. "Loggerheads" went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at Outfest, audience awards at the Florida and Nashville Film Festivals, and the top screenwriting prize at the Madrid International LGBT Film Festival.
Tim's fifth feature, "Lazy Eye", which he wrote, directed, and produced alongside Todd Shotz, was released in 2017. In addition to his film accolades, Tim received an Alfred P. Sloan Award for the development of "Kitty Hawk", an original screenplay about the Wright brothers. He has also taught screenwriting at the University of Southern California, the University of California in Los Angeles, Hunter College in New York City, and Vermont College of Fine Art.
Tim has extensive experience in commercial and music video direction, and was an art director for Miramax Films for ten years. A native of North Carolina, Tim currently resides in Los Angeles and is represented by Robin Budd of Viewfinder Management.
