Yoichi Sai, a renowned Japanese film director, was born on July 6, 1949, in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. His mother is Japanese, while his father is of zainichi Korean descent.

Sai's impressive filmography includes his 2004 film, Chi to hone, which garnered four Japanese Academy Awards, with two of those awards going to Sai himself for Best Director and Best Screenplay. This achievement built upon his previous nominations in the same categories for his 1999 film, Tsuki wa dotchi ni dete iru.

In 1999, Sai shot Buta no mukui, a film set amidst the breathtaking natural landscapes of Okinawa, inspired by Eiki Matayoshi's 1996 Akutagawa Prize-winning novel of the same name. Buta no mukui went on to win the Don Quixote prize at the 1999 Locarno International Film Festival.

Sai's accomplishments in the industry were further solidified when he received the award for Best Screenplay at the 11th Yokohama Film Festival for his film, A Sign Days.
