Yonfan, a multifaceted film professional, has written, directed, and produced all 14 of his motion pictures, showcasing his remarkable talent and dedication to the craft.
Born in Wuhan, China, Yonfan was raised in Taiwan and currently resides in Hong Kong. Throughout his illustrious career, he has played a significant role in shaping the careers of numerous renowned actors, including Maggie Cheung, Chow Yun-fat, Daniel Wu, and Rie Miyazawa, among others.
Yonfan has been a pioneer in incorporating LGBT themes into mainstream Hong Kong cinema, working with many notable Chinese screen sirens of his era. Furthermore, he has made significant contributions to the restoration of his film library and photographic work, which includes rare images of China and Tibet from the late 1970s and 1980s.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of cinema, Yonfan was honored with the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by French President Jacques Chirac in 1997.
As a connoisseur of Chinese paintings, Yonfan has made generous donations to the Musée Guimet Paris and the Arthur M Sackler Gallery. He is also a published writer, having penned books of his essays and short stories, memoirs of world cinema, and art collections in Chinese, English, and Japanese.
Yonfan's latest film, No.7 Cherry Lane, marks his debut in animation and his first new film in a decade. This highly acclaimed film received the "Best Screenplay" award at the 76th Venice Competition in 2019.
