Gilbert Francis Lani Damian Kauhi, better known as "Zulu", was born on October 17, 1937, on the majestic Big Island of Hawaii. As a youngster, his classmates at high school bestowed upon him the nickname "Zulu", which would later become synonymous with his iconic acting career.
One of his most notable roles was that of "Detective Kono Kalakaua" in the wildly popular television series, Hawaii Five-O, which premiered in 1968. This remarkable role not only catapulted him to stardom but also served as a springboard for a successful nightclub career.
In 1971, he signed a lucrative 2.5 million contract to appear at C'est Si Bon Showroom in the esteemed Pagoda Hotel and Restaurant. Following his departure from Hawaii Five-O, he went on to become a headliner at Duke Kahanamoukou's in the International Market Place for several years.
After leaving Duke Kahanamoukou's in 1972, he continued to perform at neighbor island hotels and participated in various benefits. In an effort to rebrand himself, he even altered the spelling of his name to "Zoulou", citing the French Tahitian pronunciation.
Eventually, he transitioned into the world of automotive promotions, serving as a manager for an automotive operation. Tragically, Gilbert Francis Lani Damian Kauhi, better known as "Zulu", passed away on May 3, 2004, in his hometown of Hilo, Hawaii.
