College swimmer Chad Billingsley, the pride of his middle-class family, must confront the truth about his actions. After initially denying it, he confesses to his father, attorney Roger, that he and several of his friends had sex with Rosalie Frank, a provocatively dressed waitress who went missing after attending their frat party. Roger tries to prevent a potential statutory rape case from ruining his son's future, but confides in his wife Karen, a refuge house worker, who instead of supporting the boys, becomes a haunting presence, leading to multiple tragic outcomes.
