In the early 1800s, English Lord John Morgan is captured by Sioux warriors while hunting in the Dakotas. He is brought to the tribe's village, where he is treated as a slave and is given to an elderly woman named Buffalo Cow Head to perform daily chores. Morgan meets Running Deer, the beautiful sister of Chief Yellow Hand, and begins to fall in love with her. He also befriends a half-breed named Batise, who helps him learn the Sioux language and customs. Despite several failed escape attempts, Morgan decides to bide his time and eventually wins the respect of his captors by killing Shoshone scouts. He then decides to learn the ways of the Sioux and become a warrior, but this journey is not without its challenges.
