In an anthill, a worker ant named Z 4195 feels insignificant in a conformity system and meets Princess Bala, who has a similar problem on the other end of the social scale. Z switches sides with his soldier friend to meet Bala again, becoming a hero in the process. He unwittingly thwarts the plans of General Mandible, who wants to divide the ant society into a superior and inferior race. Z and Bala, unaware of the danger, try to escape the oppressive system by heading to Insectopia, a place where food fills the streets.
