Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman, and his adopted Roman brother Messala are close friends despite their distinct backgrounds. When Messala joins the Roman army and fights in Germany, Ben-Hur's feelings for the family slave Esther grow, but he doesn't pursue her due to their differing social status. Three years later, Messala returns as a decorated Roman officer, coinciding with a Zealot uprising against Roman rule.
