In the early 1960s, nuclear engineer Hank Marshall and his wife Carly, who struggles with bipolar disorder, are reassigned to a new posting in Alabama. Hank's wife's erratic behavior, which includes increased sexuality and destructive outbursts, causes trouble wherever they go. Despite this, Hank and Carly love each other and their two teenage daughters, Alex and Becky. However, their life is threatened when Carly's behavior attracts the attention of their new commander, Vince Johnson, and Hank's project, code-named Blue Sky, faces problems.
