Spud, a new owner from England, is convinced by Autry to raise horses for the Army instead of selling the ranch. However, when Autry and Neale submit identical bids, the Colonel decides to settle the dispute with a horse race. But Neale has other plans, and Autry's stable is mysteriously set ablaze on the night before the competition.
