A pregnant widow navigates the harsh realities of life in a women's prison, confronting brutal conditions and authorities while preserving her dignity and individuality.

A 19-year-old girl, Marie Allen, is sentenced to an Illinois prison for her role in an armed robbery. Despite the efforts of a compassionate warden, Marie's harsh treatment by the cruel matron Evelyn Harper transforms her from a naive and innocent young woman into a tough and hardened prisoner.
