Two women, one a repeat offender and the other a first-time offender, are sent to a maximum security state prison in the 1950s. The repeat offender feels a sense of familiarity and comfort among the inmates and guards, while the first-time offender is young, married, and terrified, struggling to cope with her fragile mental state. The prison is ruled by the brutal and heartless Warden van Zandt, who inspires fear in the guards and inmates alike. The only source of hope and decency is the prison doctor, who tries to protect his patients despite his limited power. The two new arrivals, Helene and Brenda, must navigate the harsh environment and find ways to survive.
