Candy Christian, a young girl, is introduced to the concept of love and self-sacrifice by MacPhisto, a Welsh poet. She narrowly escapes his attempted rape and instead becomes involved with her father's gardener, Emmanuel. After her father discovers their affair, he sends her on a trip to New York City with her uncle and aunt. Along the way, Candy faces various challenges and encounters a range of characters, including a brain surgeon, an underground filmmaker, and a hunchback. She also becomes involved in a series of sexual encounters, including a pornographic film and a relationship with a hermit who turns out to be her father.
