In 1943, a Canadian Navy officer, 'Mac' MacClain, is reeling from the loss of his ship and many lives to a German torpedo. As he waits for a new assignment, he forms a bond with Joyce Cartwright, sister of one of his fallen officers. The story follows the construction and deployment of the new Corvette K-225, HMCS Donnacona, where Mac takes on a mentorship role with his new subaltern, Paul Cartwright, Joyce's younger brother, fresh out of naval academy.
