In 1966, producers Bert Schneider and Bob Rafaelson created a TV show featuring The Monkees, the American answer to the Beatles. Four young men - Mickey Dolenz, Davey Jones, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork - were chosen for the roles. With the aid of a successful music producer and TV promotion, the Monkees became a sensation, but their success was tainted by being labeled talentless phonies. The film follows the band's struggle to prove their detractors wrong, experimenting with music and show ideas, while navigating internal tensions and deciding what's truly important: material success or artistic respect.
