As Carter uncovers a cryptic list of men's names, including his own, he becomes increasingly disturbed when he discovers that some of the names belong to people who are no longer alive, prompting him to confide in a trusted individual about his unsettling discovery.

In this thriller, Dr. Carter Elson's life is turned upside down when he discovers a mysterious list of men's names, including his own, among his wife Alex's belongings. As the list progresses, with some names belonging to deceased men, Carter and his friend/agent Betty must unravel the cryptic meaning behind it before his name reaches the top. Meanwhile, Alex, a small-town girl who married Carter for social status, becomes increasingly frustrated with the obstacles in her path and finds solace in an unlikely alliance with two other unhappy wives. Together, they concoct a plan to "shorten the list" and take control of their lives.
