On the eve of their deployment to Vietnam, a group of young men engage in a crass game called "Dogfight," where they compete to find the most unattractive woman to take to a party. One of the men, Eddie, selects a shy and pacifist waitress named Rose, who initially agrees to accompany him. But as they spend more time together, Eddie begins to develop feelings for Rose, and must confront the consequences of his initial deception.
