Farm boy Jack Cooper, nicknamed "Deuce", is drafted into the minor league Santa Rosa Rockets as a pitcher despite having no organized baseball experience. He struggles with pressure, causing his favorite curve ball to result in home runs. The team's coach, Chubb, decides to room Coop with a chimpanzee named Ed Sullivan, who becomes a mischievous roommate. Ed has a rocket arm and becomes a team player, but Coop's attempts to save him from harm may jeopardize his major league prospects. Meanwhile, Coop starts a romance with single mom Lydia and navigates the opinions of her precocious daughter Lizzie and the mischievous Ed.
