In the late 19th century US, a young boy named John William Goodnight survives a brutal attack on his family's wagon, which leaves him orphaned. He is taken in by Judge Aldous Shaw and his wife Rebecca, who raise him as their own. Years later, John is appointed as a circuit court judge in the Wyoming Territory, a lawless region. As he tries to bring justice to the area, he also seeks to uncover the identity of the bandit who killed his parents. His investigation leads him to the town of Crooked Stick, where he becomes embroiled in a web of corruption and deceit. With the help of a local widow, Dr. Kate Ramsey, John must navigate the treacherous landscape to uncover the truth and bring the killer to justice.
