Joan, a newlywed to John Le Mesurier, finds herself drawn to comedian Tony Hancock, who is struggling with depression and alcoholism. Hancock's career is in decline, and he has recently left a rehab center. Joan proposes a deal: if he can stay sober for a year, she will leave John for him. Hancock takes a chance and travels to Australia to film a comedy series, but it ultimately fails, and he takes his own life.
