American music teacher Gethsemane Brown arrives in Ireland to lead a school chorus, but her new home turns out to be haunted by the ghost of Eamon McCarthy, a famous musician accused of murder-suicide five years ago. Gethsemane is the first to understand the ghost's musical message, "D-E-A-D", and to see him. Eamon believes she was meant to help him clear his name and find the real killer, allowing him to move on to be reunited with his love, Orla. Gethsemane becomes an amateur sleuth, aided by the ghost and her colleagues, including Inspector O'Reilly and Griff, who both have romantic interests in her.
