Teenager Terry Fleming lives outside Gander, Newfoundland, a bustling town during World War II as a stopover for flights between North America and Europe. Terry wants to work in Gander to be close to movie stars and GIs, and his neighbor Laurie, who works at the American base, can get him a job as a waiter. However, Terry also wants to stay at home and care for his ailing mother, Violet, who has diphtheria.
