On an Oklahoma farm during the Great Depression, a dust storm and a reckless driver, Red Stovall, arrive at the Wagoneer home. Red, a country-western musician, is on his way to audition for the Grand Ole Opry, but faces financial and health struggles. His nephew, Whit, sees an opportunity to escape a life of poverty and begs his mother to let him join Red on a journey to Nashville, where he hopes to learn from his uncle and avoid a life of manual labor.
