In 1929 Massachusetts, two young women, Zoe and Alice, are employed as stenographers by Professor Edgar at Faldo's estate, where they meet a group of men, including German novelist Monty, former student Peter, and painter Sevy. Edgar is conducting research on male sexuality, and Zoe and Alice are tasked with assisting him.
